4 places to pick up cooking tips and tricks in Arapahoe County

Each of these four schools offers classes that will help you whip up magic in the kitchen. Introduction to Basic Sauce Making or Advanced Pastry Creations, anyone? You can find classes for kids, corporate events and private parties. Here are a few spots to help you get in chef shape.

Kitchen Table Cooking School

The scoop: Yvonne Haag is a true believer in fresh ingredients and scratch-made food. She opened Kitchen Table nearly 10 years ago to teach those principles of cooking to the community. “We’re very into educating and teaching people the basics, from holding knives to different techniques, like sautéing, roasting and making sauces from scratch,” she said. “We take the fear out of going into a kitchen and cooking.” Classes include wine pairings. Haag estimates about 12,000 students have taken classes at Kitchen Table Cooking School since it opened in 2008.

Sur La Table at The Streets at SouthGlenn

The scoop: There’s a cooking class offered for every skill level at Sur La Table inside The Streets at SouthGlenn mall. Jennifer Hiltz, resident chef at the school, said there are classes held daily. “I teach a good variety of everything — from French croissants to Thai food,” she said. “Our classes change seasonally. Right now, we’re doing a lot of fall flavors like stews and pies and fall vegetarian cooking.” Sur La Table also will offer several Thanksgiving and holiday cooking and presentation courses this year. Check out Spooktacular Halloween Treats for Kids at 10 a.m. Oct. 29 or the Date Night Dinner course, held twice every Saturday.

Almost Vegan Cooking School

The scoop: Owner Debbie Devore started Almost Vegan Cooking School out of her home in Centennial nearly six years ago. “I started eating (vegan) about 10 years ago and I was amazed at how incredible I felt,” she said. “So it started out just teaching friends and family how to make amazing, delicious, healthy food, and it eventually grew into a cooking school.” Devore’s home kitchen is a recreational vegan cooking school. She offers online classes, in-person sessions and local meet-ups hosted at restaurants and grocery stores.

Uncorked Kitchen & Wine Bar

The scoop: Uncorked Kitchen combines cooking classes with a memorable dining experience. Seasonal classes are tailored for adults, kids, couples, teens and corporate events. Everyone leaves Uncorked with a stronger palate and better understanding of the spices and flavors that go into each menu item, regardless of their skill level. Uncorked offers wine classes where guests can learn about each type of wine and how it pairs with different dishes. Upcoming classes include Pinot Envy at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 and the Wine and Chocolate Social wine tasting at 3 p.m. Oct. 21. Kids can enroll in fall and winter break cooking camps. Check out Take & Eat Pies for kids at 9:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Nov. 22.
